Kansas City Royals

Andrew Miller could be a valuable edition to the Royals’ bullpen in 2015 (sportsmockery.com).

The Kansas City Royals had their best season in nearly 30 years in 2014 and much of the credit deserves to go to the team’s strong bullpen. With names such as Kelvin Herrera, Wade Davis, and Greg Holland, the Royals’ pitching in the 7th inning or later was the best in the league. If the Royals plan on making another playoff run in 2015, the team’s pitching is going to play a vital role and adding depth to an already strong bullpen could help lead the way.

A lefty

The Royals’ pitching staff is predominantly right-handed and adding a strong left-handed arm to the mix could prove the team well. Andrew Miller is a 29-year old pitcher who spent the beginning of his career as a starter for the Detroit Tigers and Florida Marlins before landing a spot in the bullpen with the Boston Red Sox and eventually to the Baltimore Orioles last season. Miller has a career 4.91 ERA, but do not let that fool you. Since 20ll, Miller has lowered his ERA every year and in 2014 when splitting time with the Red Sox and Orioles, Miller finished the season with a 2.02 ERA in 73 appearances.

Strengthening a strength

The Royals’ strengths last season relied on pitching, defense and situational hitting. And although adding depth to the bullpen would be contradictory to what I criticized the Detroit Tigers for when they added to a strength in their pitching staff and neglected to fix their bullpen, I believe it is important to have a strong pitching staff and it is nearly impossible to repeat a season the Royals bullpen had last year with the same roster.

It is unlikely the Royals will be able to maintain the pitching staff they had last year long-term and with that, also the success. With the free agent market willing to pay high dollar amounts for top end relief pitchers, it will be difficult to keep the Royals bullpen together for long. Andrew Miller would be a great asset to the Royals’ pitching staff and could help be a strong veteran presence in the clubhouse as well.

Although it will be difficult to repeat the success the Royals’ had in 2014, by adding the right pieces and signing players that mix well in the clubhouse, the Royals’ chances for success in 2015 will greater and will have the opportunity to defend the American League Pennant.
