Kansas City Royals

The addition of David Robertson could bring the Royals’ bullpen to tops in the league again in 2015 (zimbio.com).

The Kansas City Royals were tops in the major leagues last season with one of the best bullpens in history. With the departure of Aaron Crow to the Miami Marlins and the possibility of the young Brandon Finnegan joining the starting rotation at some point in this upcoming season, the Royals will need to look to call on someone else to help elevate the team’s bullpen to the level they were at during their World Series run. 29-year old David Robertson could be the guy the Royals call on in 2015 to help return the pitching staff to championship form.

The numbers

David Robertson first came up with the New York Yankees in 2008 and has spent the first seven years of his career there.  Robertson has a career 2.81 ERA and appeared in 60 or more games with 60 or more innings pitched in every season since 2010. In 2011, Robertson appeared in 70 ballgames for the Yankees and finished the season with a 1.08 ERA, with 100 strikeouts, while only allowing 35 walks and one home run all season long. The 5 foot 11, 195 pound right-hand pitcher is not overpowering, but has proven to be one of the most consistent relief pitchers in all of baseball.

How he fits in

David Robertson would be a great addition to the Royals’ already strong bullpen. Every team in baseball would benefit from a relief pitcher that consistently puts up great numbers every season. Although Kansas City’s bullpen is loaded with multiple talented arms, David Robertson could come in right away and have an impacted on the Royals’ success as well as help mentor the young pitchers on the team’s roster.

Probability of signing

It is highly unlikely a deal will be made in order to bring the services of David Robertson to Kansas City in 2015. With the Royals resigning of Luke Hochevar this week, it looks as if they are already near being set for the start of Spring Training in February. If it were to happen, Robertson would most likely need to replace either Wade Davis or Greg Holland on the roster. With both Davis and Holland most likely wanting big deals in the near future due to their success, there is a high probability the organization will look to trade one of them anyway before that time comes, and if not, would most likely try and resign them before they tried to bring someone else in.

If it were my decision, I would try and do all I could to help load up the team’s bullpen for 2015 and the future. Kansas City and the rest of baseball saw just how crucial the bullpen was to the Royal’s success last season and if they look to produce similar results next season, having a strong pitching staff will be an important priority.
